TEMPE, Ariz. -- Junior midfielder Manya Makoski's goal off of a header from 5 yards out in the 72nd minute was all the Arizona State soccer team (7-7-1; 3-1-1 Pac-10) needed as they shutout No. 16 Arizona (12-4-0; 3-2-0 Pac-10), 1-0, Friday night at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. With the victory Arizona State stays undefeated in the all-time series against the Wildcats at 9-0-1.
The match featured a lot of fast and athletic players on both teams as the furious tempo was sustained for nearly the entire 90 minutes. However, ASU did control the pace for most of the match as they outshot the UA 22-9 and posted six corner kicks to the Wildcats one.
ASU looked to get on the board first in the 70th minute when Elizabeth Bogus tagged a hard shot off the top of the crossbar, but it skipped off and was cleared out. But just two minutes later, the Devils kept the pressure on and it finally paid off. On the left flank, Lauren Niblett chipped a short ball to Bogus; she then headed it to Makoski who then headed it into the open net for the game-winner. Makoski's goal was her second game-winner of the year and sixth in her career, moving her into a tie for fourth all-time.
UA goalkeeper McCall Smith was tested throughout the match by the Sun Devil front line as she collected seven saves. ASU's Kim Bingham made just two saves on the night.
Jennifer Klein led UA with three shots, two on-goal, while Candice Wilks posted two shots.
Up next, the Devils will close out their home season next weekend, hosting UCLA on Friday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m. and USC on Sunday, October 31 at 1:00 p.m.
