TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State soccer team (4-5-0) set the tone of the game early as they tallied their first of three goals with just over a minute into the match as they went on to shutout San Diego State (3-5-3), 3-0, Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Sun Devils are now 43-0 all-time when they score three or more goals.
ASU started the furious pace and the scoring at the 1:41 mark when Katie Leahy dished a soft pass to Katie Mahoney, who then drilled the shot into the upper right 90 from about 10 yards out.
The Sun Devils then tallied their second score just before half time when Kira Sarkisian collected a long ball, controlled it and then lofted it over the San Diego State goalkeeper Sophia Perez as she tried to come after the ball. It was Sarkisian's first career goal as a Sun Devil and it came at 44:26 in the first half.
The Aztecs finally got their first shot off of the match in the 43rd minute of play.
The Sun Devils then put the match away right at the beginning of the second half. As Leahy was playing the ball, she got taken down and fouled, giving the Sun Devils a free kick from about 15 yards straight out at the 46:16 mark. Brittany Cooper then took the free kick and nailed the shot over the SDSU wall and pass the diving Perez.
SDSU's best scoring chance came in the 57th minute when Lisa Nielsen shot a hard close-in shot, but ASU's goalkeeper Kim Bingham made a diving save to her left to keep the ball out and preserve the second shutout of the year for ASU.
SDSU did take five shot in the second half to move their total to six, while the Sun Devils finished with 15 on the night. ASU had a slight 6-4 edge on corner kicks, and each keeper made four saves.
Up next, the Devils have a quick turn around out of the Valley as they catch a plane to Las Vegas to face UNLV on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
