Stanford, Calif. - Stanford won its first Pac-10 game this afternoon as the Cardinal upended Arizona State, 2-1, at Maloney Field. Senior Emilee Shim scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute off an assist from junior Leah Tapscott to help the Cardinal improve to 9-3-2 on the season, with a 1-1-1 mark in conference play. The first Pac-10 loss dropped Arizona State to 6-7-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Pac-10.

Stanford opened the game with a goal by senior Martha West in the 11th minute. West, who drew a foul, fired a free kick into a line of defenders, but took the ball back and dribbled into an opening before lobbing a shot over the keeper.

Arizona State evened it out late in the first half, though, as Brittany Cooper, the Sun Devil's leading scorer with six goals, took the ball from Alissa Oldenkamp and found the back of the net.

Both teams continued to generate opportunities, but with 10:13 left in regulation, Tapscott fired the ball into the box and Shim fired it into the cage for the go-ahead goal.

Up next, the Devils return home to host in-state rival Arizona on Friday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m.
