BERKELEY, Calif. - Arizona State's Brittany Cooper nailed a 22-yard free kick in the 30th minute to lift the Sun Devils to a 1-0 upset over No. 14 California, Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears dropped to 7-3-2 overall (0-1-1 Pac-10), while the Sun Devils improved to 6-6-1 (2-0-1 Pac-10).
"I'm so proud of our team and the heart they showed today against a great Cal team, said head coach Ray Leone. The team also showed a lot of resolve... it was an excellent win."
Cooper scored the game's only goal off a 22-yard free kick in the 30th minute. Cooper took the kick on the right flank, and it rolled into the lower-left side of the goal. Cooper is now tied for the team high with five goals and the game-winner marks her fifth all-time. Additionally, Cooper has tallied 21 career goals, moving her into sole possession of fourth all-time.
Cal held the Sun Devils without a shot for the rest of the half and held the majority of the possession for the remainder of the game but couldn't find the back of the net.
Junior forward Dania Cabello led the Bears with four shots. Sun Devils goalkeeper Kim Bingham recorded eight saves on the day. Junior Ashley Sulprizio started the game in goal for Cal, but sophomore Anna Key relieved her in the 64th minute.
After the Bears earned their fourth corner kick of the game with a couple of minutes to play, Sulprizio quickly checked into the game for Key, hoping to score the equalizer off the set piece. However, Cal's late corner kick wasn't directed in Sulprizio's vicinity, and ASU cleared the ball down field.
Up next, the Devils head over to Stanford for a match on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
