PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) - Jeff Varem scored 17 points and Marcus Moore scored all 12 of his points in the final 11 minutes to lead Washington State past Arizona State 63-56 Thursday night.
The Cougars (9-9, 3-5 Pacific-10) snapped a three-game losing streak, and a four-game losing streak against Arizona State (8-9, 2-6).
Ike Diogu led Arizona State with 13 points and five rebounds. Diogu went 9-for-10 at the free-throw line, but made just 2 of 7 field-goal attempts. Shami Gill and Justin Bellegarde hounded Diogu on defense. Diogu notched his national-best 49th straight game in double digits.
The Sun Devils led most of the first half but also committed 13 turnovers and had to score the last five points to lead 26-23 at the half. An early 8-0 run in the second half pushed WSU ahead to stay. Arizona State finished with both a season-low 56 points and a season-high 24 turnovers. The 24 turnovers is the most since Dec. 29, 2001, when ASU had 25 vs. Canisius, a span of the past 68 games.
Washington State shot just 31 percent in the first half, but hit 52 percent in the second half and 40 percent for the game. Arizona State shot 44 percent.
ASU had season-lows in points (56), field goals made and attempted (16-of-36) and second-half points (30) and also matched a season-low with five assists.
Point guard Jason Braxton added 10 points, his fifth-straight game in double digits, and had a career-high six steals.
