TEMPE, Ariz. - Junior midfielder April Pettigrew broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 88th minute to lift the No. 22 Pepperdine women's soccer team (6-2-1) to a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Arizona State (3-5-0) Sunday afternoon at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu.

After a scoreless first half, Arizona State broke the deadlock when junior midfielder Manya Makoski received a pass from sophomore midfielder Katie Mahoney and scored her third goal of the year at the 56:38 mark.

The Waves tied the score at the 68:49 mark on a penalty kick by junior forward Jenna Fodor. The penalty kick was set up when junior forward Megan Woods was fouled inside the box by ASU senior defender Holly Azevedo.

The scored remained tied 1-1 until the 87:16 mark when Pettigrew scored her first goal of the season. The score was set up following a corner kick by Arizona State.

Junior goalkeeper Anna Picarelli caught the corner kick and quickly rolled the ball to sophomore forward Jennifer Brewer. The Sun Devils were slow in transition and Brewer dribbled the ball down field before passing it to Pettigrew inside 15 yards. Pettigrew then drilled the ball inside the left post pass ASU goalkeeper Kim Bingham for the winning score.

Pepperdine held a 12-7 shot advantage, including a slim 6-5 edge in shots-on-goal.

Up next, the Devils return home to Sun Devil Stadium, hosting San Diego State on Friday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m.
