TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 15 Arizona State water polo team got a record performance in the goal from Jennifer Sanderson, but it was not enough as the Sun Devils dropped a 6-4 decision to No. 6 Hawaii in the second game of the day for both teams at the Long Beach Invitational Saturday. The Sun Devils (10-15, 2-8 MPSF) saw four of its players score once goal in the loss as the Rainbow Wahine improved to 2-0 against Arizona State this season.
Following both teams scoring one goal each in the first quarter, UH took the lead at the half with a second-quarter goal to secure the 2-1 lead. The third quarter saw the Sun Devils take a 3-2 lead before the Rainbow Wahine added the next three goals in the contest to take the lead for good at 6-3. ASU added a fourth-quarter score, but could not find the net again to absorb the loss, 6-4.
Sanderson (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) recorded 19 saves in the game, surpassing the record of 16 in a contest set by Nancy Holmes in the 2002 season with Elizabeth Houck (So., San Diego, Calif.) tying the mark last season with 16 stops against Harvard on March 23, 2003. On the advantage situations, the Sun Devils could not capitalize as they were able to convert on just one of six tries while UH was 4-for-11 in the same situation.
Offensively, Elaine Bentley (So., San Diego, Calif.), Katie Davis (Sr., Riverside, Calif.), Kimberlee Stevens (So., Lodi, Calif.) and Tessa Wyborny (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) each tallied one goal in the game while Raelyn Ritchie (Fr., Newport Beach, Calif.) and Ashley Bower (Fr., Bondi Beach, Australia) each added an assist in the contest.
