TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 17 Arizona State water polo team closed out its tough two-game Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) road swing with a 13-3 loss at No. 2 Stanford Sunday in Palo Alto, Calif., to finish the trip 0-2 following an 8-7 loss at No. 10 San Jose State one day earlier. The Sun Devils (6-9, 0-3 MPSF) suffered their fifth loss in a row while seeing leading scorer Katie Davis (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) go scoreless for the first time all season, snapping her 14-game streak. SU improved to 11-2 on the year and 4-0 in the MPSF.
The host Cardinal came out shooting to open the contest and scored two goals in the first 1:43 of the game. SU would eventually build a 9-0 lead before Ashley Bower (Fr., Bondi Beach, Australia) scored with 1:47 remaining in the half. SU added another score before the half to hold a 10-1 lead at the intermission.
In the third quarter, SU added another two goals to push the advantage to 12-1 heading into the final stanza. There, Katie Hedley (Fr., Lake Forest, Calif.) scored on a 4-meter shot to open the quarter before Kimberlee Stevens (So., Lodi, Calif.) added the final Sun Devil tally with 4:17 showing on the clock. SU added a final score with 0:35 remaining for the final 13-3 score. Nine different Cardinal scored in the game.
In the goal, Jennifer Sanderson (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) recorded four saves in the second half while starter Elizabeth Houck (So., San Diego, Calif.) stopped two shots in the opening two stanzas.
The Sun Devils return home for a 6 p.m. Sunday (March 14) contest with MPSF foe Pacific at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The game with the Tigers also will be the team's Gold Game and all fans are encouraged to wear gold to the contest.
