Bill Sawyer Invite | Iowa State Last Chance | Washington Last Chance
TEMPE, Ariz. - Though the Arizona State track and field teams were divided among three locations for three different meets, it did not stop the Sun Devils from turning in stellar performances, including several qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Championships and one collegiate record. The Sun Devils competed in two indoor last chance meets (Iowa State and Washington) while also opening the home outdoor season with the Bill Sawyer Invitational at Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium.
On the indoor surface in Ames, Iowa, the men's 4x400m relay team of Jason Barton, Steve Fitch, Seth Amoo and Domenik Peterson clocked a 3:03.43 to win the race, automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships and set the school and collegiate record in the event. The mark also stands as the fastest time in the world and is only the second mark all season to break the 3:03 barrier (LSU finished second to ASU in the same race at 3:03.97). The anchor of the relay, Peterson, also recorded another school record as he blazed to a 20.84 in the 200m dash, bettering the 21.01 set by Amoo earlier this year. Peterson also earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships in this, his freshman season.
Also at ISU, two more marks went for Top 5 placement on the ASU record books, both on the women's side. Individually, Jacquelyn Johnson finished second in the 60m hurdles at 8.38 to provisional qualify for the national meet and move into No. 3 on the lists. Johnson joined Christina Hardeman, Kandace Tucker and Cassandra Reed on the 4x400m relay team that clocked a 3:34.98 to finish third and provisionally make the national field. Their time is the third-fastest in school history. Other provisionals were earned by Johnson in the 60m hurdles (8.38), Reed in the 400m (53.81), Lewis Banda (46.58) and Fitch (46.92) in the 400m, Amoo in the 200m (21.19) and Trevell Quinley in the long jump (7.64/25-00.75).
At the Washington meet, three athletes earned provisional marks and moved onto the ASU Top 5 lists in three events as well. Freshman Jessica Pressley won the weight throw with a provisional mark of 19.10m (62-08.00) while Roger Cahill took sixth in the 3,000m run with a provisional time of 8:03.18. Both marks move each athlete into the No. 2 spot on the ASU lists. Jennifer Kowacz earned a provisional in the shot put with a heave of 15.72m (51-07.00). Anna Masinelli moved into fourth on the lists with her mile time of 4:53.81 (eighth).
The final meet of the day was the home opener for the remaining Sun Devils with three regional and one Pac-10 marks being earned while eight events had ASU athletes claiming victory. Overall, including preliminaries and finals, a Sun Devil took first four times for the men and five for the women, five seconds for the men with six for the women and each gender with three bronze finishes.
