TEMPE, Ariz. - With Katie Davis (Sr., Riverside, Calif.) on a seven-game scoring streak and leading the team in goals with 12 heading into the final game of the UC San Diego Arena Invitational, it was only fitting that she capped an 11-10, four overtime victory for the No. 14 Arizona State water polo team over No. 20 Cal Baptist Sunday in LaJolla, Calif. The win not only gave the Sun Devils (4-4, 0-0 MPSF) 10th place in the 12-team field, but also landed ASU its first win in five tries against the Lancers.
The Lancers took an early 2-1 lead heading into the second period and extended its lead to 4-2 at halftime. After both teams scored one goal each in the third quarter, the Sun Devils tallied five goals to CBUs three in the fourth stanza to tie the score at eight and send the teams to overtime. In the first of two overtime periods, the Lancers scored twice and the Sun Devils once to regain the lead, 10-9. In the second overtime period, ASU tallied once and held CBU scoreless to force sudden victory. After neither team scored in the third overtime stanza, Davis took a pass on a Sun Devil counterattack and put the ball in the back of the net to end the game with ASU winning its first overtime game of the season, 11-10.
Davis paced the team with four goals to push her scoring streak to eight games with a team-high 16 goals. She also added 10 steals on the defensive end. Kimberlee Stevens (So., Lodi, Calif.) chipped in three goals while Katie Hedley (Fr., Lake Forest, Calif.), Elaine Bentley (So., San Diego, Calif.) and Tessa Wyborny (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) each added one goal apiece.
Defensively, Jennifer Sanderson (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) recorded three saves between the pipes to earn the win. As a team, the Sun Devils scored on four of their nine six-on-five advantages while the Lancers converted on five of their seven advantage attempts.
ASU will have next weekend off from competition before returning to the road Feb. 21-22 when its battles in the UC Davis Shootout. One week later, the Sun Devils will play in their first MPSF conference game when No. 11 Hawaii visits the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center for a 2 p.m. contest Feb. 27.
