TEMPE, Ariz. - The 20th-ranked Arizona State softball team (4-1) split its first two games during the first day of the ASU triangular, winning 2-0 over Kansas (0-2) and falling to Northwestern (2-0) 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh.

Against Kansas, Ashley Werschky (2-0) threw a one-hit shutout and Phelan Wright blasted a two-run home run that hit the left field foul pole to seal the win in the bottom of the sixth inning. Werschky tied a career-high for strikeouts with eight, allowing only a second inning double.

In the second game, ASU went ahead 3-0 in the first inning when Valerie Sevilla hit an opposite field three-run home run to left field. But Northwestern came back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first.

It looked as if the Sun Devils would seal their second win of the day when Wright singled to centerfield, driving in two more runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-2 lead. However, the Wildcats scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to cap a dramatic come-from-behind victory.

After starting out with two straight singles, ASU's starting pitcher Desiree Serrano was lifted for Bre DeSanta. But then a costly ASU error loaded the bases and another error brought in one run for a 5-3 score. Sheila McCorkle was then hit by a pitch to drive in another run, and Carri Leto followed with a single to right bringing in the tying run. Werschky then relived DeSanta (1-1), but Erin Mobley followed with the game-winning single.

All three teams will be back at Farrington Stadium on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
