TEMPE, Ariz. - The 20th-ranked Arizona State softball team (10-5) split its final two games at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex Sunday, winning 9-4 over Dayton and falling to Ohio State, 6-3. The Sun Devils finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.
Against the Flyers, ASU posted four runs in the first inning, two coming off the bat of Keri Pulcifer's single to center field. Ashley Werschky also tallied an RBI when she doubled home Pulcifer, and Sharee Zaleski recorded the fourth run when she singled to left field.
The Devils then tagged two more on in the second when Valerie Sevilla hit her third home run of the year, a two-run shot over the left center field fence. Dayton got one back in the second when Spencer Izor doubled in Kristen Pfirrmann.
In the third inning, ASU's Katie Cobos hit her first career home run, another two-run shot, over the left field fence. Dayton followed with two more in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 8-3, but ASU scored once again in the sixth when Jennifer McCard singled home Himmita Hixson, who earlier reached on a fielder's choice. The Flyers would get one more back in the seventh, but Werschky (3-3) worked out of the jam to get the last batter to ground out. Dana Campbell went the distance for Dayton, giving up 12 hits and eight earned runs with three strikeouts.
In the final game against the Buckeyes, ASU starting pitcher Bre DeSanta (2-2) loaded the bases in the first when she allowed a single from Megan Schwab and walked Nycole Koyano and Karisa Evans. DeSanta then hit Natalie Hales to put OSU up 1-0. OSU starting pitcher Jamee Juarez (3-0) then drilled a fifth inning grand slam off reliever Desiree Serrano to up the lead to 5-0.
The Devils did get three runs back in the sixth inning when Werschky nailed her first home run of the year, a three-run shot, over the left center field fence. But in the seventh, OSU recorded one more run to push the final score to 6-3, while the Sun Devils could not plate another run.
DeSanta took the loss, working the first three innings with one run off four hits. Serrano finished the final four innings, allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Juarez went all seven innings, giving up six hits and three runs with two strikeouts.
Up next, the Sun Devils will host their annual Louisville Slugger Tournament at Farrington Stadium, Friday, February 20 through Sunday the 22nd.
