TEMPE, Ariz. - Phelan Wright's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the 20th-ranked Arizona State softball team (6-3) to a 1-0 eight-inning win over Western Michigan (0-1) Thursday night at Farrington Stadium.
Both starting pitchers held the other's team in check throughout the game. ASU had a chance to get on the board first in the sixth inning with consecutive singles from Valerie Sevilla and Kristin Farber, but Broncos' pitcher Laura Stewart (0-1) got out of the jam unscathed.
The Devils then capitalized in the eighth inning. With one out, Farber reached first on a fielder's choice then stole her sixth base of the year to get on second. After Sharee Zaleski walked, Wright came to the plate and stroked a 2-1 offering into center field to drive home Farber for the game-winning run.
Desiree Serrano (3-0) went the distance for ASU, allowing four hits while striking out a season-high 10 batters.
Up next, the Devils will play two games on Friday at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex as hosts of the 18-team Fiesta Bowl Tournament against New Mexico at 2:30 p.m. and Texas Tech at 4:30 p.m.
