TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 17 Arizona State water polo team scored early and often on its way to the largest margin of victory in school history with its 20-2 defeat of Marist in the Sun Devils' second game of the day at the 2004 Michigan Invitational Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich. Ten different Sun Devil players notched at least one goal in the contest, including contributions from three freshmen, to even ASU's record to 1-1 on the season while the Red Foxes fell to 0-2.
Prior the contest, the Sun Devils' greatest margin of victory came in their second game of the 2003 season when they white-washed UC Santa Cruz, 14-0, in Tempe. In that contest, eight different Sun Devils netted at least one goal while defense recorded the program's first shutout of an opponent in school history.
Tessa Wyborny (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) led the offensive output with four goals scored and added three assists in the game for seven points and broke two personal best marks. Her four goals are a single-game best in her career while the seven points are one more than her highest output so far at ASU. Joining Wyborny with personal bests was Ashley Bower (Fr., Bondi Beach, Australia). Bower, in just her second collegiate game, scored three goals and added three assists to help the Sun Devils to their first win of the season. Elaine Bentley (So., San Diego, Calif.) also rewrote her personal best entries with four assists to break her single-season bests of assists in a game and points (two each).
Gili Kollan (Jr., Kiriat Bialik, Israel) also scored a trio of goals and added an assist in the game. Freshmen Katie Hedley (Fr., Lake Forrest, Calif.) and Lindsay Fraka (Fr., San Jose, Calif.) each scored the first points of their careers as each scored a pair of goals and added one assist each while Kimberlee Stevens (So., Lodi, Calif.) added the same scoring line.
Rounding out the goal scorers for the team were single scores by Katie Davis (Sr., Riverside, Calif.), Lauren Jacobson (Jr., League City, Texas), Holly Newman (So., San Diego, Calif.) and Adriane Mota (So., Long Beach, Calif.). Adding assists in the contest were Davis and Heather Rempfer (So., Lodi, Calif.) with one each.
On the defensive end, the Sun Devils held the Red Foxes to no goals on three man-advantage plays while scoring on both of their opportunities. Kristie Meyer (So., Reno, Nev.) tallied five saves in goal for the win.
The Sun Devils return to action Sunday with another pair of games slated to conclude the 2004 Michigan Invitational. ASU faces the host No. 10 Wolverines at 9:15 a.m. before it squares off with No. 14 UC San Diego at 1:45 p.m.
