DALLAS, Texas (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Senior outside hitter Kim Mehlhorn recorded 15 kills to lead Arizona State to a 3-0 win over SMU and capped a perfect weekend as the Sun Devils won the SMU Radisson Volleyball Classic. ASU defeated SMU in straight sets, 30-21, 30-23, 30-18 and did not lose a game during the three-match tournament.
The perfect 3-0 weekend improved Arizona State to 5-4 on the season and completed the non-conference portion of the 2003 schedule. After going 0-4 on the previous two Saturday's, ASU defeated SMU and Stephen F. Austin to climb over the .500 mark for the season. SMU fell to 5-4 on the season and 2-1 in the tournament with the loss.
Senior middle blocker Mandy Stephens (Napa, Calif.) was named tournament MVP after her 10-kill performance against the Mustangs. In the three matches, the fifth-year senior recorded 27 kills and did not make a hitting error for a .587 attack percentage. Stephens added to her impressive weekend with a match-high six blocks. Senior outside hitter Juliana Escobar (Brasilia, Brazil) was also named to the all-tournament team, recording 11 kills vs. SMU and 23 in the two matches she played in during the tournament.
ASU out-hit the Mustangs .315 to .037 and out-blocked SMU 10.0 to 2.0. Senior setter Cheryl Anglin (Queen Creek, Ariz.) led all players with 24 assists and senior libero Courtney Blocher (Scottsdale, Ariz.) recorded 17 digs.
Arizona State opens Pac-10 play next weekend with a pair of matches at Washington (Sept. 18) and at Washington State (Sept. 19).
