TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Tournament MVP Devon Forster finished with 16 kills and nine digs to lead the San Diego Toreros to a three-game sweep of the Arizona State Sun Devils to finish the 2003 Sun Devil Volleyball Classic a perfect 3-0. San Diego defeated ASU 30-26, 30-15, 37-35 Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Toreros also defeated Utah (3-2) and Ohio (3-1) to start the 2003 season 3-0. Arizona State fell to 1-2 in the tournament, losing to Ohio (3-1) and San Diego (3-0) on Saturday.
The Sun Devils were led by the 11 kills from sophomore outside hitter Sarah Watkins (Mishawaka, Ind.). Watkins hit .348 (11-3-23) for the match and added seven digs and one service ace. For the tournament she ranked fourth with a .306 hitting percentage in the three matches, recording 27 kills and finished with a tournament-high nine service aces (0.82 per game average). Senior outside hitter Juliana Escobar (Brasilia, Brazil) had six kills and was named to the all-tournament team by averaging 3.91 kpg for the tournament.
Forster led all players in the tournament by averaging 4.42 kills per game. The Toreros also featured a well-balanced offensive attack against the Sun Devils with three players recording double digits in kills. Freshman outside hitter Cassie Wolpern finished with 12 kills and seven digs and freshman middle blocker Christie Dawson added 11 kills and four blocks in the victory. Sophomore setter Lindsey Sherburne was also named to the all-tournament team, contributing 44 assists vs. ASU and averaging 13.17 per game in the tournament.
The Sun Devils return to action for their first road trip of the season next weekend with three matches at the Nevada Volleyball Classic in Reno, Nev. ASU will face Gonzaga (4:30 p.m.) on Friday, then battle Tennessee (10 a.m.) and tourney host Nevada (7 p.m.) on Sept. 6. The Devils will next play at Wells Fargo Arena on Sept. 26 against rival Arizona at 7 p.m.
