TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Senior Jered Liebeck fired seven innings of shutout baseball and Andre Ethier tabbed five hits as the No. 4 Arizona State Sun Devils defeated the Dayton Flyers 10-1 Friday night in non-conference college baseball action at Packard Stadium.
The Sun Devils improved to 19-1 with the win, extending ASU's best start to a season since going 23-1 in 1972. The win also extended ASU's season-high winning streak to 10 games, surpassing the nine-game streak to start the season. Dayton fell to 0-2 on the season after having lost its season opener to No. 11 Notre Dame 10-9 earlier in the day.
Liebeck, a senior right-hander from Glendale, improved to 4-0 with his five-hit, six-strikeout performance against the Flyers. Freshman left Erik Averill allowed only one unearned run and did not give up a hit in two innings in his first appearance as a reliever. Dayton starter Tim Miller suffered the loss by giving up eight hits and six runs in four innings.
ASU out-hit Dayton 13-5 and benefited from four Flyer errors. Ethier led all players with a 3-for-5 game and sophomore catcher Joel Bocchi was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the victory. Sophomore shortstop Dustin Pedroia continued his hot hitting by going 2-for-3 to tab his 12th multi-hit game of the year and now has at least one hit in 19 of ASU's 20 games this year and 30 of his last 31 dating back to last year. Sophomore third baseman Frank Mesa also had three hits for his fourth multi-hit game as a Sun Devil.
Arizona State returns to action Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against No. 11 Notre Dame (1-0) at Packard Stadium.
