LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Arizona State men's swimming and diving team (1-1) recorded a 138-99 win over UNLV last Saturday at the Buchanan Natatorium. Nick Brunelli and Joona Puhakka picked up two wins apiece to help the Sun Devils notch their first win of the young season.
Brunelli touched the wall first in both the 100 freestyle (44.87) and the 200 freestyle (1:41.73) and also notched the second-fastest 50 freestyle time in the country so far this year with his opening split of 20.38 in the 200 free relay. Other individual wins in the swimming pool included David Kolozar in the 200 butterfly (1:48.55), Ahmed Hussein in the 200 backstroke (1:48.03) and Leonardo Martins in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.33). The 200 free relay took home a win with a time of 1:22.62.
In the diving pool, Puhakka swept the 1-meter (367.88) and the 3-meter (366.83) for the second time this year, while teammate Brant Bingham finished second in both the 1-meter (291.90) and 3-meter (278.25). Bingham's 1-meter score represents the first NCAA qualifying standard that he has recorded in his young career.
Sun Devil swimming & diving is in action next the weekend of November 14-15. UCLA visits the Mona Plummer Aquatic center on Friday for a women's only event while USC will be the opponent on Saturday for both the men and the women.
