NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The No. 15 seed Arizona State women's golf team finished up play this afternoon at the inaugural Hooters Women's Collegiate Match Play Championship, falling to No. 14 seed Stanford 3-1-1 at the Barefoot Resort. Junior Josefin Gustafsson (Falkoping, Sweden) earned the Sun Devils' lone victory against the Cardinal, finishing one-up over Jenni Tangtiphaiboontana.
ASU Sophomore Sara Jones (Valencia, Calif.) halved her match with Kim Kouwabunpat while junior Erin Tone (Gilbert, Ariz.) and freshman Tiffany Tavee (Gilbert, Ariz.) each were narrowly defeated by one-up scores; Tone to Lauren Todd and Tavee to Angela Rho. Freshman Charmaine Erasmus (Bradenton, Fla.) lost her matchup with Kelly Husted 4 and 3.
Earlier in the day, the Sun Devils advanced in the consolation bracket after finishing 2-2-1 against California. The freshmen both had good early rounds as Erasmus topped Cal's Anna Temple 4 and 2 while fellow newcomer Tavee bettered Sophia Sheridan 3 and 2. The early session losses for ASU were Gustafsson finishing one back of Claire Dury and sophomore Alissa Kuczka (Phoenix, Ariz.) suffering a 5 and 4 setback to Sarah Huarte. Jones halved her early match as well, tying the Golden Bears' Danielle Nash.
This meet marks the final event for the ASU Women's Golf team's fall season. The spring season begins with the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, February 9-11, 2004, in Palos Verdes, Calif.
