TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State outside hitters Natalie Harris and Kim Mehlhorn each tallied 17 kills, but it wasn't enough as the visiting Washington State Cougars defeated the Sun Devils in five games (3-2) in Pac-10 Volleyball action Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Game scores were 26-30, 30-14, 26-30, 30-16, 15-9 in favor of the Cougars.

Arizona State drops to 9-17 overall and 4-13 in conference play after losing seven of its last eight matches. Washington State improves to 9-19 on the year and moved into sole possession of eighth place in the Pac-10 with a 5-12 record.

Mehlhorn (Tempe, Ariz.) recorded a season-high 17 kills and fell one dig short of her first double-double of the season. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Watkins (Mishawaka, Ind.) recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and tied a season high with 10 digs. Senior setter Cheryl Anglin (Queen Creek, Ariz.) tallied a game-high 46 assists, one off her season high of 47 set against Stanford. Junior libero Stephanie Kohner (Anthem, Ariz.) recorded a career high with 19 digs and senior middle blocker Mandy Stephens (Napa, Calif.) added 11 kills for the Devils.

WSU freshman outside hitter Kristen Carlson (Purcellville, Va.), senior outside hitter Zanda Bautre (Riga, Latvia) and freshman setter Kali Richards (Spokane, Wash.) all recorded double-doubles. Carlson had 14 kills and 15 digs for the Cougars. Bautre recorded 10 kills and 20 assists and Richards tallied 25 assists and 12 digs. Freshmen middle blockers Jennifer Todd (Henderson, Nev.) and Jen Barcus added 13 and 11 kills respectively.

The Sun Devils will close out the 2003 season at Wells Fargo Arena Saturday at 7 p.m. against No. 11 Washington. ASU's five seniors (Cheryl Anglin, Kim Mehlhorn, Courtney Blocher, Mandy Stephens and Jodi Proctor) will be honored before the match for their four years of hard work and dedication to the Sun Devil program.
