TEMPE, Ariz. -- Senior forward Patrice Feulner tallied the only goal Friday on a header from a 74th-minute corner kick, lifting 22nd-ranked Arizona State to a 1-0 victory over No. 24 Washington in a Pac-10 women's game at Husky Soccer Field.
The Sun Devils (11-4-3) remained in second place in the conference standings with a 5-2-1 record. Washington (10-6-3) dropped to 3-4-1 in Pac-10 play. With the win, the Sun Devils have tied a program-high with five Pac-10 wins which they also attained in the 1997 and 1999 seasons.
Both teams are likely to receive NCAA Tournament berths when the 64-team field is announced Monday afternoon.
Arizona State capitalized on its second corner kick of the game to net the game winner. Brittany Cooper served a cross from the right side into the center of the box. Feulner ran on to the ball and headed it in from eight yards out at 73:24.
The teams played a scoreless first half with ASU holding a slim 4-3 shooting advantage. The most dangerous opportunity before halftime was created in the 36th minute by UW junior Tina Frimpong, the Pac-10's leading scorer with 12 goals. Frimpong sprinted into the Sun Devil goal area to intercept a pass and run at goalkeeper Kim Bingham. Her low shot was directed at Bingham who came away with the save.
Bingham was credited with three saves en route to ASU's eighth shutout. Lisa Brookens registered three saves for the Huskies who were outshot by a 10-5 margin.
The Sun Devils defeated UW for the second straight season after losing their first five all-time encounters with the Huskies.
Up next, the Devils will travel across the state to Pullman where they will close out the regular season against Washington State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
