TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State cross country teams traveled to Pullman, Wash., for the Pac-10 Championships Saturday at the Washington State Golf Course and returned with the No. 4 women capturing runner-up honors for the second year in a row with 78 points while the No. 15 men finished fifth in the eight-team field with 112. Stanford, ranked No. 1 in both the men's and women's national polls, won the conference titles as a team and had an individual win the conference crown as well.
In the women's team race, Stanford accumulated 22 points and placed runners in the Top 3 to win their eighth Pac-10 title in a row. SU and ASU were followed by UCLA (79), Washington (123) and Oregon (161) to round out the Top 5. The SU men won their fourth conference crown in a row with runners in the first and second places off the race while Oregon (91), Washington (93), Arizona (109) and ASU completed the Top 5.
In the women's 6,000m run, Amy Hastings (So., Leavenworth, Kan.) continued to shine for the Sun Devils as she claimed her fourth Top 5 finish of the season in as many races by crossing the line in fourth place. Hastings, the first non-Stanford runner to finish the race, completed the circuit in 21:40.10 to earn first-team all-conference honors. This season, she has run four times with two wins and a third place to accompany her finish today. Following Hastings for ASU was Anna Masinelli (So., Scottsdale, Ariz.) in 11th at 22:03.80; Desiree Davila (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif.) in 12th at 22:08.00; Amanda Lyon (So., Phoenix) in 22nd at 22:52.9 and Jessica Crate (Fr., Brights Grove, Ontario) in 29th at 23:20.70 to round out the team scoring.
Also competing for the Sun Devils but not figuring into the scoring were Corey Randall (Fr., Cincinnati) in 32nd at 23:28.50; Liz Lindgren (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.) in 34th at 23:32.20 and Jenna Wrieden (So., Glendale, Ariz.) in 44th at 23:53.50. As a team, the 78 points scored ranks as the fifth-best in school history for conference championship meets. The record of 59 was set last year.
Aaron Aguayo (So., Phoenix) led the men's charge with an 18th-place finish by completing the 8K course in 25:38.10. He was followed in the scoring by Juan Reyes (Jr., Phoenix) in 21st at 25:42.00; Roger Cahill (So., Glendale, Ariz.) in 26th at 25:54.30; J.J. Duke (Jr., Colvis, Calif.) in 29th at 25:57.90 and Ryan Warrenburg (So., Franklin, Ind.) in 31st at 26:01.50. With the adjusted scoring (only the Top 7 finishers from each team earn points), ASU's point placements were 17, 18, 23, 26 and 28 for 112 points.
Kal Clark (Fr., Louisville, Ky.), Dan Maher (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.), BIlly Smith (Fr., Glendale, Ariz.) and Jeremy Cramer (Fr., Boise, Idaho) also competed in the race for the Sun Devils. Clark took 47th at 26:33.10 with Maher (50th, 26:35.60), Smith (62nd, 27:26.60) and Cramer (67th, 27:47.00) rounding out the ASU contingent. The team's 112 points ranks the fifth-best in school annals with the record dating back to the 2001 meet held in Scottsdale when the men finished second with 75 points.
Following a week off from competition, the Sun Devils will head to Portland, Ore., for the 2003 NCAA West Region Championships, Nov. 15. The men leadoff the races at 11 a.m. with a 10,000m run while the women's 6,000m run is set to begin at 12:15 p.m. The Top 2 teams to finish, as well as the Top 3 individuals not apart of those teams, will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, Nov. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa. The remaining field will be filled out with at-large selections Nov. 17.
