TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior defender Amy LePeilbet's incredible 55-yard free kick was the lone goal tallied on a hot Sunday afternoon at the Sun Devil Soccer Stadium as Arizona State (8-2-2; 2-0-0 Pac-10) shutout Stanford (6-6-1; 1-1-0 Pac-10), 1-0. The win also marks the first time in school history that the Sun Devils swept the California/Stanford series.
Both teams came out to possession play with each team trying to find an opening to work the ball through, but both defenses stepped up to the challenge. However, in the 38th minute of action, a Stanford player committed a foul on a Sun Devil just inside the Stanford half. That set up LePeilbet's free kick. As she lofted the ball toward the box, Stanford goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart came out to attempt the catch, but the ball went over her head and through her fingers as it found the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal. The goal was also LePeilbet's third on the year, setting a career high for the U.S. U-21 National Team defender.
Stanford did lose standout player Allyson Marquand in the 23rd minute of action with an undisclosed injury. She had two shots, both on goal before leaving the match. The Cardinal kept the pressure on in the second half, but the Sun Devil defense kept their sixth opponent from scoring this year.
Stanford out-shot ASU 11-8, while the Devils recorded the only corner kick of the game. ASU's Kelly Fitzgerald started the game in goal, going the first 23 minutes with three saves. Freshman Kim Bingham then finished the game, logging 67 minutes also with three saves. Stanford's Barnhart went the distance, making three saves as well.
Up next, the Devils travel down to Tucson on Saturday to take on Arizona at 7:00 p.m.
