TEMPE, Ariz. - Both Arizona State and San Diego State scored late second half goals, but that was all either team could put together as the 16th-ranked Sun Devils (6-1-2) tied the Aztecs (4-5-1), 1-1, Friday afternoon at the SDS Sports Deck in San Diego.
The first half featured a defensive battle as both teams combined for six total shots, but both team then turned it up in the second half. ASU's Brittany Cooper tallied her team-leading and career-high seventh goal of the year in the 73rd minute when she nailed a free kick from 30 yards out.
However, the reliable Devils' defense, who had surrendered only one goal in the past five matches, allowed SDSU to tie the game in the 87th minute when Kim Castallenos scored from 5-yards out.
Both teams took five shots in the two 10-minute extra frames, but either could not come up with the game-winning tally. Sun Devil goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald made a season-high nine saves on the day. SDSU out-shot ASU 19-14, while the Devils had seven corners to the Aztecs five.
Up next, the Devils will stay in the Southern California area to take on the University of San Diego on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
