TEMPE, Ariz. - The final day of competition concluded Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays and the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational with 10 Arizona State track and field athletes competing at the two venues. The women's shot put throwers of Sandra Orsund (Jr., Plymouth, Ind.) and Julia Pedersen (So., Grand Forks, S.D.) had the best day for the Sun Devils as each recorded a throw earning them NCAA regional and Pac-10 Championship entries for the end of the year.

Orsund placed ninth in her flight and 12th overall with a throw of 14.44m (47 feet, 4.5 inches) while Pedersen took 12th in the heat and 15th overall with a heave of 14.16m (46-5.5). Also on the women's side at the Mt. SAC event was Porchea Carroll (So., Oxnard, Calif.) and Joni Smith (Sr., Long Beach, Calif.). Carroll, competing in the 100m open race, placed fourth in her heat with an 11.88. That time held up as the sixth overall. Smith took second in her heat of the 400m open race and fifth overall with a 54.61.

On the men's side at the Mt. SAC Relays, Vince Mosca (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz.), Ryan Zimmerman (So., Nipomo, Calif.), Mike Rivers (Sr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) and Casey Clark (Sr., Colbert, Wash.) each competed. Mosca was the lone two event entrant, participating in the shot put invitational and the open discus. In the shot, he recorded a NCAA regional qualifying mark of 16.86m (55-3.75) to place 12th overall. He also took 13th in the discus with a 44.84m (147-01). Rivers, competing in the javelin, finished 14th in the event with a throw of 57.43m (188-05). Zimmerman (open high jump) and Clark (invitational high jump) both did not record a height in their respective competitions.

At the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, three Sun Devils competed in four events with Chris Kasik (So., Mesa, Ariz.) ran once. Jones finished sixth in his hammer throw heat and finished 21st with a throw of 51.25 (168-02) while taking 27th overall and 11th in his flight of the discus with a toss of 45.01m (147-08). Baca ran the 800m run and took 17th overall with a time of 2:15.28. Kasik ran the 110m high hurdles in 14.84 to record a Pac-10 qualifying mark to finish 16th overall.

The Sun Devils will again split up next week as they head to three separate locations with competitions set for the Drake Relays, Oregon Invitational and UC San Diego Open, April 24-26.
