TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 20 Arizona State water polo team halted its two-game losing streak Saturday at the Claremont Colleges Tournament with a 12-6 victory over Occidental College. Bryn Kuech (So., Bonsall, Calif.) notched three goals while Lauren Jacobson (So., League City, Texas) and Ashley Orzalli (Jr., Acampo, Calif.) each scored twice to lift the Sun Devils to 13-9 on the year.
Katie Davis (Jr., Riverside, Calif.), Gili Kollan (So., Kiriat Bialik, Israel), Daya Mau (Fr., Honolulu, Hawai'i), Kim Stevens (Fr., Lodi, Calif.) and Holly Newman (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) each added a goal as the Sun Devils scored in double digits for the fifth time this year. Assisting on the goals were Catharine Taber (Jr., Clayton, Calif.), Mau and Tessa Wyborny (Fr., Walnut Creek, Calif.), each of which had two.
ASU used balanced scoring in the game as each quarter saw the Sun Devils place three more goals on the board. After jumping to a 3-0 lead following one period of play, the ASU defense allowed a goal on its way to a 6-1 halftime lead. OC score four goals after intermission to bring the score to 9-5 and the final tally going in favor of ASU, 12-6.
On defense, Lizzie Houck (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) made two saves while allowing two goals and Kristie Meyer (Fr., Reno, Nev.) stopping six shots and allowing four goals. With a man advantage, the Sun Devils scored twice on their eight opportunities while OC scored just once on their seven tries.
Kollan extended her scoring streak to a team-high nine games in a row while Davis kept pace at six in a row.
Action continues for the Sun Devils Sunday in Claremont, Calif., with their final two games in the tournament as they battle Harvard and host Claremont-Mudd Scripps Colleges.
