TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 19 Arizona State water polo team opened its fourth weekend in a row on the road with a 10-6 defeat of host UC San Bernardino while pushing its overall record to 8-7 on the year. Freshman Daya Mau (Honolulu, Hawaii) led the offense with four goals and Bryn Kuech (So., Bonsall, Calif.) added a pair in the victory.
The Sun Devils, who scored the first goal of the game, opened the contest with four goals in the first period to counter the three tallied by the Coyotes. Leading 4-3, ASU extended its lead to 5-3 as it entered the half. With the win, the Sun Devils improved to 8-0 in games they lead after two quarters of play.
ASU exploded for another quartet of scores in the third period, compared to one for UCSB. Ahead 9-4, the Coyotes added two goals in the final stanza and the Sun Devils notched another to bring the final to 10-6. The victory was the first over the Coyotes for ASU after two one-goal losses a year ago.
On the scoresheet, Ashley Orzalli (Jr., Acampo, Calif.), Gili Kollan (So., Kiriat Bialik, Israel), Tessa Wyborny (Fr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Adriane Mota (Fr., Long Beach, Calif.) each tallied a goal with Kollan, Heather Rempfer (Fr., Lodi, Calif.) and Lena Soghomonian (So., Belmont, Calif.) each adding two assists. Also assisting on Sun Devil goals were Orzalli, Elaine Bentley (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) and Lizzie Houck (Fr., San Diego, Calif.). Houck, the ASU goalie, also recorded nine saves.
Next up for ASU, following a well-deserved weekend off and at home, is the Lancer Invitational, March 14-15, in Riverside, Calif. The event will be hosted by Cal Baptist.
