TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 19 Arizona State water polo team brought its season-best win streak to three in a row after going down to the wire to secure an 8-7 victory over Pomona-Pitzer College Saturday in San Bernardino, Calif. Gili Kollan (So., Kiriat Bialik, Israel) earned the victory for the Sun Devils with her goal as the game clock showed 1:30 remaining to give ASU its first weekend sweep in program history and just the third time ever that the team went undefeated on one day of play.
After springing to an early 3-0 lead, the Hens cut into the lead with two goals in the second period, making the intermission score 3-2 in favor of ASU. A single goal for the Sun Devils following a pair of Hen scores tied the contest at four heading into the final stanza.
The offense for each team lit up the scoreboard in the final quarter. PPC added three goals with ASU knotting the score at seven heading toward the end of the game, setting up the gamewinner for Kollan. Tessa Wyborny (Fr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) added a single score in the contest while Katie Davis (Jr., Riverside, Calif.), Ashley Orzalli (Jr., Acampo, Calif.) and Daya Mau (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii), who scored four goals in the first game of the day, each tallied two goals in the win.
Assisting in the scoring was Davis with three and Kollan with two while Bryn Kuech (So., Bonsall, Calif.), Mau and Heather Rempfer (Fr., Lodi, Calif.) each recorded an assist. In the goal, Lizzie Houck (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) stopped seven shots in the game to help the team to the win.
Next up for ASU, following a well-deserved weekend off and at home, is the Lancer Invitational, March 14-15, in Riverside, Calif. The event will be hosted by Cal Baptist.
