TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 20 Arizona State water polo team closed out its stay in San Diego, Calif., Sunday with its fourth loss in a row, this time absorbing a 10-3 defeat from No. 12 UC Irvine. With their 0-4 record at the UC San Diego Arena Invitational over the weekend, the Sun Devils claimed 12th place in the tournament and saw their record slip to 3-5 after two tournaments.
Catharine Taber (Jr., Clayton, Calif.), Bryn Kuech (So. Bonsall, Calif.) and Ashley Orzalli (Jr., Acampo, Calif.) each scored for the Sun Devils in the game. UCI came out firing with three goals in each of the first three quarters of action. At the start of the final stanza, ASU was down 9-1 before allowing one more goal and scoring two more of their own. Lizzie Houck (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) made five saves in the game for the Sun Devils.
The current losing streak the Sun Devils are on, with three of the losses coming to nationally ranked opponents, ties the longest such string of games in program history. ASU also dropped four in a row at the end of last year before knocking off Chapman in its final game of the season.
The Sun Devils hit the road again next weekend with a trip to New Jersey and the Princeton Invitational, Feb. 14-15.
