TEMPE, Ariz. - For the second game in a row, the No. 20 Arizona State water polo team faced a ranked opponent and, unfortunately for the Sun Devils, they suffered their second loss in a row, this time in a 9-2 decision to No. 16 UC Davis at the UC San Diego Arena Invitational Saturday evening. ASU, now 3-3 on the year, is 0-2 in their first games away from Tempe.
The Aggies started strong with two goals in the first and a trio in the second to forge a 5-0 lead. The Sun Devils did their scoring in the second half, though their two tallies were not enough as UCD tacked on another four to make the final margin, 9-2. Daya Mau (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii), for the second game in a row, score one of the two ASU goals on a four-meter penalty shot, this being afforded the chance when Gili Kollan (So., Kiriat Bialik, Israel) drew the penalty. Elaine Bentley (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) scored the second ASU goal.
The Sun Devils fell into the fourth pool of championship play and will meet Cal Baptist Sunday at 7 a.m. PST. ASU also will face No. 12 UC Irvine at 3 p.m. PST to conclude play in the event.
