MESA, Ariz. -- Led by a season-high 10-run fourth inning and two doubles each from Jeremy West and Cesar Castillo, the 20th-ranked Arizona State baseball team defeated the University of Portland 14-2 in a seven-inning non-conference college baseball game Tuesday night at Hohokam Stadium.

The Devils improved to 29-18 overall with the victory and are now 19-10 in non-conference action. Portland, who has picked up wins over ranked opponents Washington and San Diego and are in the hunt for the West Coast conference division title, fell to 23-27 with the loss.

The Devils jumped out to an early lead with a pair of two-out runs each in the second and third innings. Senior catcher Castillo plated two runs with a sharp double down the left field line to score West and Ryan McKenna. West added a run with a double in the bottom of the third and came around to score on a single up the middle by freshman right fielder Nick Cadena.

ASU used its biggest inning of the year with 10 runs in the fourth to extend its lead to 14-0. Sending 15 batters to the plate, the Devils used seven hits to score the most runs in an inning since posting 11 vs. Creighton on Feb. 16, 2001. Castillo added another run-scoring double and Cadena brought home two more runs with a single to center field. Sophomore left fielder Rod Allen doubled home two runs and back-to-back triples from Steve Garrabrants and Joel Bocchi capped the big inning.

ASU starter Carlos Arguello picked up the win, scattering three hits and striking out three to improve to 2-1 on the year. Sophomore reliever Aaron Klusman finished off the win by allowing two runs in three innings.

West and Castillo both went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles to lead the Devils at the plate. Freshman third baseman Jeff Larish was 1-for-4 with two runs scored to extend his career-high hitting streak to nine games.

Portland's Trevor Hahn, who also picked up the loss on the mound, extended his hitting streak to 24 games with a single to right field in the top of the seventh inning.

The Sun Devils and Pilots will conclude the two-game midweek series tomorrow night at 6 p.m. ASU is scheduled to start sophomore right-hander Josh Perrault (0-0, 3.68) on the mound. The Sun Devils return to Pac-10 action this weekend with a crucial three-game series against conference leader USC Friday through Sunday at Hohokam Park.
