CORVALLIS, Ore. - A two out single in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference in the game as sixth-ranked Arizona State (34-10, 4-3 Pac-10) fell, 1-0, to 14th-ranked Oregon State (32-12, 5-3 Pac-10) today in Corvallis.
It was a pitcher's duel between Arizona State's Erica Beach (21-7) and Oregon State's Kristen Hunter (11-4). Both pitchers held each of the other's team in check with many ground ball outs. The Sun Devils could only manage three hits off of Hunter, one each by Kristin Farber, Beach and Nichole Thompson. The Beavers scattered seven hits, but were unable to plate a runner until the bottom of the sixth inning when they manufactured the lone run.
After a 10-minute rain delay, the Sun Devils were unable to score in the top of the sixth. Oregon State opened their half of the sixth inning with a leadoff single by Brynnen Guthrie. She was then sacrificed over to second. After getting Jessica King to fly out for the second out, Traci Feldt singled to center field to drive in the winning run.
Despite having the 3-4-5 batters up in the seventh inning, The Sun Devils were unable to produce a tying run.
Up next, Arizona State and Oregon State will finish the two game series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
