TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State track and field recorded seven NCAA provisional qualifying efforts and five runner-up finishes, as the Sun Devils hosted some of the nation's top collegiate teams at the 23rd Annual Sun Angel Classic at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. Saturday.
A total of five meet records were also set, highlighted by Muna Lee's (Louisiana State) new Sun Angel Stadium/Joe Selleh Track record in the women's 200m (22.90). Lee's winning time eclipsed Maicel Malone's 1991 record of 23.02. Double winners on the day included former Sun Devil Dwight Phillips in the 100m (10.26) and the men's long jump (26-11.75) and Alabama's David Kimani in the 800m (1:49.37 and the 1500m (3:41.93).
Leading the way for the Sun Devils, were runner-up finishers in the men's and women's 1500m races, senior Brandon Strong and junior Lisa Aguilera. Strong and Aguilera clocked NCAA provisional times of 3:43.78 and 4:19.16, respectively. Redshirt freshman Juan Reyes finished second in the men's 3000m in 8:14.71, a time which surpassed the previous meet record of 8:15.13, but the owner of the record, NAU's Henrik Ahnstrom, improved his own Sun Angel best with a time of 8:13.89, ahead of Reyes.
ASU's women's 4x400m relay team of freshman Cassandra Reed, senior Candida Coulson, sophomore Seneca Holmes and junior Joni Smith finished second with a NCAA provisional time of 3:36.25, just behind USC's 3:34.32. Sophomore Jodi Smith finished second in the women's high jump, clearing a height of 5-8.75.
Also turning in NCAA provisional qualifying marks were senior David Wood in the shot put (fourth, 59-3), Coulson in the 400m hurdles (third, 59.10), and the men's 4x100m (fourth, 40.06) and 4x400m (third, 3:05.41) relay teams.
Other notable finishers for ASU were redshirt freshman Jeff Dodge finishing fourth in the men's 800m (1:50.81) and freshman Trevell Quinley placing fourth in the men's long jump (24-3.5).
Three of the five meet records were turned in by the high school competitors, including Peoria High School's Jessica Onyepunuka in the girls' 100m (11.79), Xavier High School's Stephanie Rothstein in the girls' 1600m (5:10.80) and the Peoria High School girl's 4x100m relay team (46.65).
Up next for the Sun Devils is the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif., Friday, April 19, through Sunday, April 21, and the Long Beach State Invitational, Saturday, April 20.
