The Arizona State men's golf team is in second place after 36 holes of the 30th annual ASU Thunderbird/SAVANE Invitational held at the Karsten Golf Course today. ASU shot an 18-under 558 (279-279), as low scores dominated the day. Texas leads the event with a 29-under 547 (271-276). Thirteen of the 16 teams shot below par on the afternoon.
Arizona State freshman Pat Moore, a graduate of Washington High School in Phoenix, is on pace to break the Thunderbird Invitational record as he is at 13-under 131 (67-64). Moore shot a 29 through the first nine holes on his second 18 en route to his 64. Jeff Quinney of Arizona State, the 2000 U.S. Amateur champion, holds the tournament record with a 15-under 201 in 1999, which included a Karsten record 62 in the final round. Moore entered the tournament with a 75.22 stroke average. Another Arizona State freshman, Jesse Mueller of Mesa, is tied for 11th with a 5-under 139. Mueller is the 2001 Arizona Amateur Champion.
Five players shot 10-under or better throught two rounds, which was the score Anders Hultman of Oklahoma State won the tournament with last year. Before Quinney's record in 1999, only two other individuals had gone better than 10-under in the tournament since 1991, as Larry Barber of ASU shot an 11-under 205 in 1994 and Phil Mickelson shot a 12-under 204 in 1991.
ASU's team record of 30-under set in 1999 also is on the verge of being broken. Texas is at 29-under 547, while the Sun Devils are a 18-under 558. New Mexico and Oklahoma State are at 15-under 561 while Pepperdine is fifth at 14-under 562. Only three teams have gone better than 20-under in the tournament since it began its three-round format in 1988: ASU's 30-under in 1999, 25-under last year and 24-under in 1991 behind Mickelson's 12-under 204.
Arizona State has won the past three Thunderbird/SAVANE Invitationals and 10 of the past 13. The teams will play a final 18 holes on Saturday with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. Arizona State will begin play at 8:30 a.m. with Pat Moore teeing at 9:06 a.m.
The Sun Devils are without their No. 1 player, as Chez Reavie played in the Masters after winning the 2001 U.S. Public Links Championship this past summer.
