TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State track and field came away with eight meet titles led by sophomore Seneca Holmes' double win in both the 100m and 400m hurdle races, as the Sun Devils opened the outdoor season hosting the Bill Sawyer Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium, Saturday.
Holmes won the 100m hurdles with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 13.77 seconds, before crossing the finish line first in the 400m hurdles in 1:02.42. Also winning meet titles for the ASU women were junior Lisa Aguilera in the 1500m in 4:30.83 (a Pac-10 qualifying time), as well as the 4x100m relay team of freshman Porchea Carroll, senior Christie Winkle, freshman Cassandra Reed and junior Tiffany Greer (46.00).
The Sun Devil men received strong performances in the middle distance events from two redshirt-freshmen, with Jeff Dodge winning the 800m in 1:56.04 and Juan Reyes clocking the top time in the 1500m (4:03.2 hand timed). In the men's 200m, freshman Seth Amoo won in his ASU outdoor debut, clocking a Pac-10 qualifying time of 21.00. The men's 4x400 team of sophomore Steve Fitch, freshman Eric Bailey, Dodge and junior Lorenzo Parham crossed the finish line first in 3:15.63 to close out the meet for ASU.
Newcomers Carroll and Reed finished two-three in the women's 100m dash, notching Pac-10 qualifying times of 11.98 and 12.00, respectively. Junior Joni Smith was ASU's top finisher in both the women's 200m and 400m races, placing second (24.65) and third (56.75).
In the field events, sophomore Sandra Orsund surpassed a Pac-10 qualifying mark for the first time this season, placing second in the women's discus with a personal best throw of 152 feet, three inches. Senior Olivia Mazzaglia was also the runner-up in the women's high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, three inches.
Including Amoo's winning performance in the 200m, the Sun Devil men picked up five Pac-10 qualifying times in the sprints. Junior Luiz Mello was the runner-up in the men's 100m (10.51), while freshman Asokah Muhammad finished fifth in 10.69. Behind Amoo in the men's 200m were Mello in third (21.08) and senior Pete Lopez in sixth (21.43).
In the men's 400m, ASU claimed four of the top five times with Fitch in second (48.02), Parham in third (48.14), Lopez in fourth (49.56) and Vello in fifth (52.00). Freshman Chris Morgan also finished third in the 110m hurdles, clocking a Pac-10 qualifying time of 14.62. The Sun Devils dominated the front pack of the men's 3000m, with senior Cheyne Jones finishing second (8:26.96), junior Jeremy Rasmussen in third (8:32.61) and junior J.R. Cox in fourth (8:34.08).
Also notching runner-up finishes for ASU were junior Kris Alexander in the men's 2000m steeplechase (6:14.41), senior Aaron White in the men's pole vault (15-5), junior Vince Mosca in the men's discus (162-5) and junior Justin Owen in the men's javelin (189-11).
ASU also has four athletes competing today in the Husky Last Chance Qualifier held in Seattle, Wash. Results will be available later in the day. Up next, those athletes who qualify will compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., Friday March 8, through Saturday, March 9.
