TEMPE, Ariz. - The eighth-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team (7-3) was defeated by North Carolina this afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center by a score of 4-3.

The Sun Devils started off the match strong taking two of the three doubles matches for the first point. Junior and sophomore duo Adria Engel and Dora Krstulovic posted a victory on the No. 1 court defeating Marlene Mejia and Julie Rotondi, 8-4. ASU's Mhairi Brown and Megan Yeats won on the No. 2 court, defeating UNC's Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis, 8-5.

North Carolina quickly recovered and won the match in singles action. UNC secured wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts with ASU's Engel falling to Mejia in two sets, 6-0, 6-2 and UNC's Kate Pinchbeck defeating Krstulovic, 6-2, 6-2. The Sun Devils took their first of two singles victories on the No. 6 court when Lauren Colalillo posted a victory over Cline, 6-4, 6-4.

The longest match of the dual took place on the No. 4 court, with ASU coming out with their second singles win. After losing the first set, sophomore Cindy Sureephong came back to defeat UNC's Lee Bairos, 2-6, 6-3, (10-8).

Up next, The Sun Devils take on Marquette on Friday, March 15, 2002 in Scottsdale, Arizona and Purdue on Saturday, March 16, 2002 at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
