SEATTLE, Wash. - While Washington competed to its fifth-best team total in school history, Arizona State's 16th-ranked women's gymnastics team was outscored in every event en route to a 196.575-194.800 loss in front of 1,750 at Bank of America Arena in Seattle, Wash., Friday.
The Sun Devils dropped to 4-3-1 on the season overall (1-3-1 vs. Pac-10 opponents), while Washington improved to 3-3 overall. Although ASU completed 19 of 24 routines without a fall, the Sun Devils' top score of the night was a 9.9 on vault by sophomore Maggie Germaine. The Huskies meanwhile earned nine scores at 9.9 or better.
The Sun Devils started the meet on uneven bars by hitting all six of their routines. Ashley Ellsberry, in just her fourth collegiate performance on bars, scored a 9.75 to lead off the rotation, which was matched by junior Margaret Wojciak before a 9.8 by Germaine, a 9.875 from freshman Kari Muth and a 9.85 from senior Laura Moon closed things out. ASU's event total of 49.025, tied for their second-best of the year on bars.
On vault, Germaine's 9.9 was the only ASU score above a pair of 9.775s by freshman Trisha Dixon and sophomore Jada Cox, en route to an event total of 48.725. The Huskies meanwhile tallied a 48.900 on vault and a 49.225 on bars to lead the Sun Devils 98.125 to 97.750 at the midway point of the meet.
In the third rotation, ASU hit five of six routines on floor exercise for an event total of 49.050. Sophomore Carla DeMartini led off with a 9.8 and Germaine and Wojciak added 9.875s. With the Huskies getting three scores on balance beam at 9.9 or better,
ASU headed to the final rotation down 147.25 to 146.8. For the second straight week, ASU hit only three of its beam routines, settling for an evening low 48-point event total, while Washington went for 49.325 on floor to bring the meet to a close.
The Huskies were led by Emily Pritchard, who won the all-around with a four-event total of 39.675, tied for the third best score in Washington school history. Pritchard went for 9.95 on vault, 9.9 on bars, 9.925 on beam and 9.9 on floor. Teammate Carly Dockandorf finished second in the all-around at 39.550.
The Sun Devils are back on the road next weekend when they compete at the Masters Classic in Lincoln, Neb., Saturday, February 23, at 8:00 p.m. CT. ASU will go up against meet host No. 5 Nebraska, No. 22 Ohio State and currently unranked West Virginia.
