The All-Time Series: The Sun Devils won for the second straight
time in Tucson to win the 76th "Duel in the Desert." ASU clinched at least
as share of third place in the Pac-10 with an 8-5, 5-3 Pac-10 record.
Arizona still leads the all-time series dating back to 1899, 43-32-1. ASU
has now won three of the last four games in the series.
Mike Williams Has Big Day as Territorial Cup MVP: Junior tailback
Mike Williams recorded ASU's second 100-yard rushing game this season with
a career-high 162 yards on 40 carries and four TD's. Redshirt freshman
Cornell Canidate had ASU's other 100-yard game when he equaled the century
mark in the second game of the year vs. Eastern Washington. His 40 rushing
attempts are the second most in ASU single-game history, with the school
record of 44 set by Kevin Galbreath vs. UCLA in 1992. Williams broke his
previous career high of 143 yards on 33 carries vs. Colorado State
(9/15/00) during his freshman season. His four TD's are tied for the second
most in ASU single-game history (now done 18 times) and marks the third
time this year a Sun Devil has scored four TD's in the game as Canidate
also had four vs. Stanford and Shaun McDonald had four vs. SDSU. The four
rushing TD's are tied for the second most in single-game history with Terry
Battle last scoring four vs. USC in 1996. The school record is five rushing
TD's by Ben Malone vs. Oregon State in 1973.
Suggs Breaks ASU Career Sack Record: Junior defensive end Terrell
Suggs had already broken the Pac-10, ASU and NCAA single-season sacks
record, and today vs. Arizona etched his name in the record books one more
time with two more sacks to give him 42 in his career breaking the ASU
career record. The previous mark was 41 set by Shante Carver (1990-93).
Suggs ended tied for the team lead with eight total tackles (five solo,
three assisted) and had three tackles for loss (-23 yards). He now has 29.5
TFL in 2002 and 63.5 in his career. He now eyes the unofficial NCAA record
of sacks of 24.5 achieved by Pittsburgh's Zeke Gadson in 1987. Suggs is a
finalist for the Nagurski, Lombardi and Hendricks national defensive awards.
Pinkard Moves Into Eighth for Single-Season Catches by Tight End:
With his game-high and career-high six catches for 80 yards vs. the
Wildcats, senior tight end Mike Pinkard now has 29 catches this year to
move into a tie for eighth with Ken Dyer (1966) for receptions in a season
by a Sun Devil tight end.
Hagan Ties ASU Freshman Record For Receptions: With three catches
for 52 yards, freshman wide receiver Derek Hagan now has 30 catches to tie
the freshman school record set by College Football Hall of Fame member and
former NFL wide receiver John Jefferson in 1974. His 386 receiving yards
are now just 37 yards short of the freshman record also set by Jefferson in
1974.
Andrew Walter Has Another Solid Game: With 295 yards on 25-for-35
(72%) passing vs. Arizona, sophomore quarterback Andrew Walter notched his
seventh game of 290 or more passing yards in his nine starts this year. He
did not throw a TD pass for only the second time this year as a starter.
With his 25 completions he is now 246-for-426 (58%) for 3,584 yards on the
year.
Miller Has His Hand in Blocked Punts: Redshirt freshman Matt Miller
blocked ASU's second punt this year early in the first quarter to lead to a
field goal. Miller was also involved in ASU's first blocked punt this year
at San Diego State when he recovered Jamar Williams blocked punt for a TD.
A Long Drive and Drives: The 10 play, 94-yard drive by ASU in the
second quarter is the longest of the year and the longest by the Sun Devils
under head coach Dirk Koetter. ASU's previous long this year was a six
play, 91 yard drive for a TD vs. Stanford (9/28) and the previous longest
for a Koetter team was a 14-play, 93-yard drive against USC last year. ASU
also had a 13-play, 84-yard drive to set up Williams' three-yard TD run and
a 10-play, 85-yard drive on Williams third rushing TD of the day.
Interception Notes: Mason Unck's interception in the first quarter
was the first of his career (30th career game) and was ASU's Pac-10 leading
20th INT (at the time) of the year. Unck's INT also marked the 13th player
to record at least one INT this year for the Sun Devils. Sophomore Jason
Shivers recorded his second and third INT's of the year in the fourth
quarter for the team's 21st and 22nd of 2002. The 22 interceptions are tied
for the 10th most in ASU single-season history. That marks the most picks
since intercepting 23 passes in 1991.
Arizona State Notes: For the fourth time this year in their 13
games the Sun Devils put points on the scoreboard first... Shaun McDonald
caught a pass in his 28th consecutive game dating back to the Oregon game
of his freshman season... junior Skyler Fulton had five receptions for 47
yards marking the second most passes he has caught in a single-game in his
career... ASU punted only one time as Tim Parker belted a 50-yarder in the
first half... for the first time in the last four games ASU won the turnover
battle (3-4)... ASU has now outscored its opponent 248-185 in the second half
this year, including a 24-7 margin vs. Arizona today... the five Pac-10 wins
are the most since also winning five in 1999... senior place kicker Mike
Barth was 2-for-2 kicking field goals (27 and 32-yarders) to update his
season totals to 21-for-30 on the season... ASU won the time-of-possession
battle 36:00-24:00... Koetter is now 18-8 overall and 8-1 at ASU when his
teams lead in time of possession.
