TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State soccer team (8-1-2:1-0 Pac-10) scored a 3-1 victory over in-state rivals the University of Arizona (5-5-1:0-1 Pac-10) behind goals by Amy LePeilbet, Elizabeth Bogus and Brittany Cooper. In front of a crowd of 903 at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium, ASU extended their winning streak against Arizona to eight games, as the all-time series now stands at 8-0 for the Devils.
Sun Devil defender LePeilbet got the home team on the board in the 18th minute of play for her second goal in as many games. ASU sophomore Stephanie Peel played a ball into the penalty area which LePeilbet and Wildcat goalie Natalie Juarez were both running toward. LePeilbet got there just ahead of Juarez and, before they collided, tapped the ball underneath her and into the net for the opening goal of the night.
Freshman Elizabeth Bogus made it a 2-0 lead for the Sun Devils in the 32nd minute with a shot from just in front of the net off of an assist from Haley Stein. This was Bogus' seventh goal of the season, which puts her ninth on the all-time career scoring list in the seven-year history of Sun Devil soccer.
After halftime, Arizona pulled one back through an effort from Kelly Nelson off of an assist from Lisa Kosena. Nelson put in a one-time shot from Kosena's pass that went past ASU goalie Kelly Fitzgerald to cut the lead in half.
The Sun Devils did not allow that goal to shift the momentum of the game as barely over a minute later, Brittany Cooper finished a move from Manya Makoski and LePeilbet to give ASU an insurance goal and put the finishing touches on the win.
Late in the game, Arizona looked like they pulled a goal back after a corner kick, but the goal was disallowed as the ball was ruled to have crossed out of bounds before it was put into the net as it hit the top of the crossbar before rebounding into the goal area.
Arizona State had a 17-8 advantage in shots for a game that saw only one offside call. Bogus had seven shots, three on goal. Wildcat goalie Juarez made seven saves in the game.
The Sun Devils will be at home again next weekend against USC on Friday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. and UCLA on Sunday, October 20 at 11:00 a.m.
