TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State soccer team (1-1-2) came up on the short end of a 2-1 decision Sunday afternoon in another overtime match (second straight and third in four matches this season), this time against Southern Methodist University (3-1) at the Colorado College Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

SMU opened the match with its first tally in the 24th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Sun Devils answered shortly after in the 29th minute on a brilliant goal by freshman Manya Makoski, her first as a Sun Devil.

Makoski, who just returned to the Sun Devil lineup on Friday after playing on the World Champion U-19 National Team, collected the ball in the midfield and went one-on-one with an SMU defender. After beating the defender, Makoski launched the ball, left-footed from around 20 yards out into the upper left ninety pass SMU goalkeeper Erin McLeod, who also just finished playing on the Canadian U-19 National Team that the United States beat in the championship last week.

Both teams held each other scoreless in the second half to force overtime. In the 99th minute, SMU tallied the game-winning goal off of a corner kick that Sasha Andrews headed in pass ASU goalkeeper Kelly Fitzgerald.

"Despite the loss, we played real well," commented head coach Ray Leone. "The effort is there...the players are really putting it out on the line. I can definitely see improvement in the team from Friday to Sunday."

Up next, Arizona State returns home for a match against Baylor on Friday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m.
