The Tale of Two Halves: It was a tale of two halves for the Sun Devils in the victory over UCF... ASU trailed 13-10 at halftime, had only five first downs, had three turnovers, five net yards of rushing and 21 yards passing. The second half was an entirely different story, with ASU offense putting up 36 points and the defense posting a shutout... ASU's second-half total offensive yards totaled 201 compared to just 60 in the first half.
The All-Time Series: For the second consecutive week the Devils faced a team it had never played before... ASU is now 1-3 against teams from the Mid-American Conference, and faced a league opponent for the first time since 1979... UCF faced a Pac-10 Conference school for the first time.
Hill Has Another Solid Game: Redshirt freshman tailback Hakim Hill had another solid all-around night for the Sun Devils... Hill had 14 rushes for 29 yards (2.1 avg.) but had a big night on special teams... he returned four punts for 38 yards with a long of 12 and had five kick returns for 157 yards (31.4 avg.)... the five kick returns is tied for the third most in ASU single-game history and his 157 return yards is just two short of the single-game school record of 159 set by Kevin Galbreath vs. Houston in 1990.
McDonald Breaks Out: Junior wide receiver Shaun McDonald had only one catch for five yards last weekend vs. Eastern Washington, but came out with a big night vs. UCF... McDonald, who had 1,104 yards receiving last year and 11 touchdown passes, caught five passes for 54 yards vs. the Golden Knights... three of five receptions were for a touchdown, including a 26-yard TD reception from Andrew Walter in the third quarter... McDonald now has 14 career touchdowns.
Suggs Has Big Night: Junior defensive end Terrell Suggs continues to inch towards the ASU career sacks record, adding three more vs. UCF to bring his season total to seven. He also caused a safety with a sack in third quarter to give ASU 19-13 lead. He needs just one more sack to move into second place in the ASU record books for career sacks... he remains in seventh place in career TFL with 40 in his three-year career.
The Last Time...: Before the safety in the third quarter by Terrell Suggs, last time the Sun Devil defense recorded a safety was against 11th-ranked Washington State (Nov. 11)... The last time an ASU player caught three or more TD passes in a game was also Shaun McDonald (10/6/01) vs. Louisiana-Lafayette... Before Josh Amobi's 21-yard interception return for a TD and Connor Banks nine-yard INT return for a TD, the last time an ASU player returned an interception for a TD was Emmanual Franklin vs. San Diego State (100 yards) last year (9/8/01).
A True Canidate: Redshirt freshman tailback Cornell Canidate led ASU in rushing with 11 carries for 57 yards (5.2 avg.)... he had a long run of 22 yards and rushed for one TD.
ASU Game Notes: Mike Barth's 47-yard field goal in the first quarter was two yards off his career-long of 49 yards set vs. UCLA in 2000... true freshman linebacker Jamar Williams recorded his first career interception in the third quarter... Williams is one of eight true freshmen to play this year for the Sun Devils... he also added his first career sack in the fourth quarter... the run by safety Riccardo Stewart on the fake punt in the third quarter resulted in 28 yards.... Connor Banks and Josh Amobi each recorded their first career interceptions and both went for touchdowns... the 45-yard play-action fake from Christensen to Pinkard in the third quarter was longest passing play for ASU this year... previous high was 26 yards (also by Pinkard) last weekend vs. Eastern Washington... Christensen had only 19 yards passing before that completion... the defense allowed only 190 total offensive yards.
UCF Game Notes: the 80-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Schneider to Doug Gabriel was the first first-down for UCF... the 80-yard touchdown pass is the fourth longest in UCF football history... Gabriel was UCF's main offensive weapon on the night, catching 5 passes for 116 yards and one touchdown... Gabriel was the nation's leading receiver for yards per game from 2002 (28.7)... Matt Prater's 48-yard field goal in the first quarter wasn't even a career long for the true freshman from Estero, Fla.... Prater was 3-for-4, including a 53-yarder, in UCF's season opener at Penn State last weekend... UCF committed 17 penalties for 133 yards and had five turnovers.
