PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Arizona State women's golf team shot a 16-over 304 Friday afternoon and is in seventh place after the second round of the NCAA West Regional, being held Thursday-Saturday, May 9-11 at the par 72, 6,199-yard Stanford Golf Course.
The Sun Devils stand in seventh with a two-day total of 612, one stroke ahead of Washington (613) and three strokes behind sixth-place New Mexico (609). ASU is part of a pack of five teams in seventh through 11th place that are within seven strokes of each other in the bid for NCAA Championship berths.
Pepperdine leads the NCAA West Regional with a two-day total of 592, while California moved into a tie with UCLA for second place with a two-day total of 595 after shooting the day's low round of 10-over 298 on Friday. Arizona (599) is in fourth place followed by Stanford (607) and New Mexico (609).
The top eight teams and two individuals after Saturday's final round will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 21-24 at the Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash. Eight teams and two individuals will also qualify for the NCAA Championships this weekend at the NCAA Central Regional in East Lansing, Mich., and at the NCAA East Regional in Baton Rouge, La.
Kang, who won the Pac-10 Championships in her last tournament, led the Sun Devils again individually, carding a one-under 71 Friday to move up five spots to a tie for third with New Mexico's Kristi Larson. Kang is at even par through the first two rounds with a two-day total of 144 (73-71), four strokes off the lead of Arizona's Lorena Ochoa (140), the top-ranked player in the country.
Junior Blair ONeal shot a three-over 75 Friday to move into a tie for 29th place with a two-day total of 153 (78-75), while fellow junior Ga?lle Truet is tied for 37th at 154 (76-78). Freshman Erin Tone is tied for 65th at 161 (81-80), and junior Melanie Hunt is tied for 89th at 166 (83-83).
