TEMPE Ariz. - Senior Kim Yost scored three goals, including the game-winner in sudden death overtime, to lift Arizona State women's water polo to a 5-4 victory over Cal State Northridge at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon. ASU improves its overall record to 8-11, while CSUN falls to 3-14 on the season.
Yost scored the game-winner on an assist from sophomore Ashley Orzalli at the 2 minute, 40 second mark in sudden death overtime. The teams played through two scoreless overtime periods before Yost's goal in sudden death.
The Sun Devils, who stormed back from a 3-0 deficit, scored four unanswered goals and held onto a 4-3 lead going into the fourth quarter. Cal State Northridge sent the game into overtime on a goal by senior Ashley Hunhoff at 2:28, assisted by sophomore Pam Barba.
ASU took its first lead of the game on a score by freshman Bryn Kuech in the third quarter, who capitalized on a 6x5 power play when CSUN senior goalie Jessica Moody was ejected.
In addition to her three goals, Yost also had an assist, while junior Kelly Prezkop netted ASU's other goal. Senior goalie Nancy Holmes racked up nine saves, including two in the second overtime period.
Barba sparked Cal State Northridge's early 3-0 lead, scoring the first two goals of the game and assisting the third. Senior Melissa Hall also scored one goal and tallied two assists. Moody recorded three saves before being ejected from the game in the third quarter. CSUN senior Michelle Daniels played the rest of the game in goal, recording one save.
These two teams will meet again tomorrow, for a 12 p.m. game at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
