LONG BEACH, Calif. - Arizona State's women's water polo team posted a 1-4 record to place eighth in the two-day Long Beach State Invitational that concluded Sunday afternoon. The Sun Devils' overall record falls to 9-16 with two games remaining on its inaugural season schedule.
ASU played three games on Saturday, defeating UC Santa Cruz 7-5, but falling to #17 UC Irvine 11-4 and #5 Long Beach State 15-3. Sunday saw the Sun Devils lose to #18 Pacific 11-3, before being edged 8-7 by #20 Cal Baptist in the seventh-place game.
Leading the way offensively for the Sun Devils was sophomore Ashley Orzalli, scoring six goals and netting at least one score in four of ASU's five games. Orzalli was a force for ASU on Sunday, scoring two goals in each of the matches against Pacific and Cal Baptist.
Senior Kim Yost scored five goals during the tournament, providing the fire-power in ASU's win over UC Santa Cruz with three scores. A total of nine different Sun Devils found the net, including freshman Bryn Kuech (three goals), freshman Lauren Jacobson (two), freshman Lena Soghomonian (two), junior Robin Kimbrell (two), sophomore Catherine Taber (one), freshman Lindsey Murillo (one) and freshman Christine Hurbis (one).
USC won the tournament with a commanding 15-5 victory over San Diego State in the championship match.
ASU will conclude its inaugural season with two games Saturday, April 20, in San Bernadino, Calif., against Cal State San Bernadino (10:30 a.m.) and Chapman (1 p.m.).
