TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State athletes Candida Coulson, Tiffany Greer, Vince Mosca and Brianna Torres each earned first-place finishes to lead the Sun Devils' track and field contingent in the opening day of the Baldy Castillo Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium, Friday.
Coulson clocked an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the women's 400-meter intermediate hurdles with her first-place effort of 58.80. Washington State's Randi Smith was the only other athlete in the 12-woman field to run under the 1-minute mark, placing second in 59.58.
In the women's 1500m, Torres outran Utah State's Kristen Coombs (4:33.54) in a Pac-10 qualifying effort of 4:32.81. Fellow Sun Devils Candi Criscione and Desiree Davila placed eighth and ninth with times of 4:40.68 and 4:40.79, respectively.
Greer's first place finish came in the women's long jump, leaping 20 feet two inches to sneak past Indiana's Rose Richmond, who settled for second with a mark of 20-1.
The only Sun Devil to win a men's event was Mosca, who took the shot put competition with an NCAA provisional and personal best effort of 59 feet, .75 inches. Minnesota's Karl Erickson was second at 56-8.75 and Central Arizona's Scott Myers took third, 56-3.
The men's long jump saw ASU's Trevell Quinley and Asokah Muhammad finish two-three with Pac-10 qualifying marks. Aarik Wilson of Indiana won the event with a leap of 24-10.5. Quinley finished runner-up at 24-7.75 with Muhammad in third at 24-3.75.
Similarly, in the women's shot put, Sun Devils Yolanda Meservey (47-11) and Sandra Orsund (47-9.75) went two-three with Pac-10 qualifying marks and personal bests. The ASU duo finished behind Shola Kadiri of Louisville, who claimed first with an NCAA provisional mark of 49-5. Julia Pederson of ASU also tallied a Pac-10 qualifying mark, placing sixth at 44-8.25.
The Baldy Castillo Invitational continues Saturday with field events at Sun Angel Stadium beginning at 11 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m.
