FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Junior Tiffany Greer finished third in the women's long jump and senior David Wood placed sixth in the men's shot put, leading the six-athlete Arizona State contingent in day one of the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., Friday.
With their top-eight finishes, the ASU duo earned All-America honors in their respective events, while gathering ASU's only team points. After day one, the ASU women are tied for 18th with Pac-10 foes Washington State and Stanford with six points, while the Sun Devil men are in a five-way tie for 29th with three points (Southern Illinois, Notre Dame, Stanford and Minnesota). Alabama leads the men's team race with 26 points, while Louisiana State leads the women's race with 21 points.
Greer, already the most decorated female long jumper in ASU history, added her third indoor All-America honor to her Sun Devil resume and fifth overall with a leap of 20 feet, 7.25 inches. Greer's mark placed her third behind Elva Goulbourne (Auburn, 21-11) and Angel Heath (Arkansas, 20-8). Greer is the ASU record-holder in the indoor women's long jump with her personal best of 21-4 set as a freshman.
Wood earned his first All-America honor with a sixth-place performance in the men's shot put with a personal best mark of 64 feet, three inches. The 2001 Pac-10 shot put champion, Wood improved his indoor personal best each time he competed in the event this season. His final 2002 indoor shot put mark moves him up to second on ASU's all-time list.
Also competing today for ASU, senior Brandon Strong finished sixth in his heat of the men's mile with a time of 4:08.27, well off the pace of his personal-best 3:59.59 set last weekend. Strong, the first Sun Devil to run a sub-four minute indoor mile, ended up with 14th fastest prelim time and failed to advance to tomorrow's final.
Freshman Trevell Quinley finished 14th in the men's long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 11.50 inches, while senior Tony Galaviz suffered a disappointment in the men's 60m hurdles, failing to finish his preliminary heat.
ASU has one last athlete left to compete in the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships tomorrow. Junior Lisa Aguilera will take her stab at a national title in the women's 3,000m race to be held Saturday at 7:25 p.m. Central Time. Aguilera's personal-best time of 9:16.23 ranks third in the nation this year going into tomorrow's final.
