SEATTLE, Wash. - With one weekend remaining to improve their NCAA indoor track and field qualifying status, Arizona State distance runners Brianna Torres, Fasil Bizuneh and Brandon Strong clocked NCAA provisional qualifying times and notched top-three finishes at the Husky Last Chance Qualifier in Seattle, Wash., Saturday.
Torres won the women's 5,000m race with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:33.19, improving upon her previous season best time of 17:03.53 set at the Iowa State Classic, Feb. 8.
Bizuneh crossed the finish line of the men's 5,000m in second place with a personal-best of 14:03.06, while Strong was third in the men's mile with a personal-best 3:59.59. Strong also became the first Sun Devil to run a sub-four minute indoor mile. Both improved their previous season best times of 14:13.79 and 4:04.04, respectively.
Jodi Smith also competed in the women's high jump with hopes of attaining an NCAA qualifying mark. Smith won the event clearing the bar at five feet, eight inches, but was still shy of surpassing the provisional standard of 5-9.75.
Up next, those athletes who qualify will compete in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark., Friday March 8, through Saturday, March 9. The final field for the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships will be announced Sunday afternoon.
