TEMPE, Ariz. - In front of 881 fans at Wells Fargo Arena, Arizona State's 17th-ranked women's gymnastics squad battled to a tie with Oregon State, while defeating Cal State Fullerton and Southern Utah for a share of the team crown at the UNO's Classic, Friday night in Tempe.
The Sun Devils (4-2-1) and OSU (3-3-1) finished the meet with season-best team scores of 195.800, while Cal State Fullerton (2-5) came in third at 194.975 and Southern Utah (0-5) placed fourth in 192.375.
ASU was rolling through the first two event rotations and even the first three routines on balance beam in the third rotation. However, the Sun Devils closed out beam with three straight falls and went into the floor exercise trailing OSU 146.950-146.325.
While the Beavers scored a season-best 48.850 on vault, ASU came through with a season-high of their own on floor exercise, 49.475. Carla DeMartini led things off with a 9.9, Ashley Ellsberry and Cassidy Vreeke each went for 9.925, and Maggie Germaine and Margaret Wojciak closed out the rotation with marks of 9.9 and 9.825, respectively.
Still, it was only enough for a tie.
"I'm really pleased with our effort tonight," ASU head coach John Spini said. "We looked 10-times better out there than we did last week, and last week (at California) I thought we looked good. We went into floor with some pressure on us and we responded."
Amidst all the down to the wire action, the unmistakable highlight for ASU was the return of senior All-American Laura Moon on the uneven bars. Moon had been unable to compete thus far this season due to preseason knee surgery and additional injuries sustained in a fall on bars in a November practice.
Friday night, Moon returned to the event in which she is the ASU record holder and closed off an ASU season-best bars rotation with a 9.825. Also helping the Sun Devils to their 48.175 event total were 9.9s from Wojciak and Kari Muth, a 9.875 from Germaine and a 9.8 by Rhonda Robinette.
ASU was also strong on vault, earning their second-highest total this season. Germaine's 9.85 led the way, followed by 9.8s from Jada Cox and Trisha Dixon. Dixon's mark was a career best for the freshman, as was her 9.9 on balance beam.
Next week the Sun Devils head to Washington in what is the first of two straight weekends on the road. ASU and Washington are scheduled to begin their Pac-10 dual meet at 7:00 p.m. PST, from Bank of America Arena in Seattle, Wash.
