Arizona State Quotes
Coach Charli Turner Thorne
On ASU's offense and fatigue: "I mean, we just stunk. We didn't make
shots. We had a lot of in-and-out shots, especially in the second half, but
we just didn't finish shots. I think it's fatigue. Rainy Crisp being out
has really hurt us. We have five guards and we play pressure defense for 40
minutes and I think we just didn't have our legs. It's a long trip and we
were tired. It sounds like a lot of excuses but it's also the truth. We
could sit here and pretend we're not tired, but when you're short on all
your shots you just see it out there, and it was frustrating. We are
definitely capable of scoring a lot better and I thought we had great looks.
But I don't think we executed nearly as well as we did the first time
around. And the first time around we had a couple days of practice to
prepare."
On Amanda Levens' game:
"She's tired. As soon as she puts the ball on the
floor she's got two people on her. Great shooters don't come up short all
the time if they have their legs under them."
On Season:
"We've got a great home stretch here so we're excited. And
we're still primed to have the best season probably ever, in the history of
Arizona State Basketball."
Forward Cian Carvalho
On Game:
"Washington's a scoring team, that's what they like to do. We're
more of a defensive team that tries to stop that from happening. We just
didn't get it done today.
On Locker Room Speech:
"Basically (Coach Thorne) told us that we need to
pick it up if we're going to be where we want at the end of the year in the
NCAA tournament and whatnot."
On Washington's Defense:
"If we could have got on the boards more, we could
have got more second shots. But, I mean, we have our off days and our on
days. But again, we rely on our defense more than our offense. They play a
zone and they're very good at what they do. We had trouble getting the ball
past their backcourt guards, but once we did, we did pretty well. It was
just a matter of getting it inside."
Washington Head Coach June Daugherty
"It was defense. We have come a long way to challenge coming into this
game. We wanted make sure that we didn't let them out-physical us like they
did in our last game down in the desert. We have worked really hard on our
defensive pressure and forcing them to rush shots with the shot clock
winding down. It made a huge difference for us.
"Offensively we had to do a better job of moving the basketball and breaking them down. ASU is good defensive team and they work very hard. We tried to wear them out and it got us open looks. It feels great to be in second place right now.
"Our team is extremely confident right now. I could see in our shoot-around yesterday that they were focused and at the same time confident and loose. We are having fun right now and you can see what is happening as a result. It's exciting.
"It was a big day today with the alumni. It's amazing the great tradition we have here and how proud our former players are of what they did here and what is happening now. To have the crowd like we did today was really neat. Our last timeout we couldn't even hear anything. It was exciting and to come up with a win capped off a great weekend."
Washington Player Quotes
Sophomore guard Giuliana Mendiola
"I think our team has been playing really well. We have been playing with
confidence, not being tense and turning the ball over. We have been very
loose lately and we played really well today.
"Our defense did a good job of getting out on their shooters, especially (Amanda) Levens. We tried to force her to do things she didn't want to do and we did a pretty good job of it today.
"Emily Autrey played really well early on and I thought Loree (Payne) obviously had a great game with the way she shot the ball. She impressed me. I give a lot of credit to the whole team for this win."
Junior guard Loree Payne
"Our defense has been improving every game. We have been working on getting
out on shooters and pressuring them, making it difficult for them to get the
ball inside to the big guns. Arizona State is a great team and I thought we
pressured them well and earned a win.
"We want to take this momentum with us to California when we face Stanford on Thursday. We have been building and building since the WSU game and we are right where we want to be with Stanford coming up.
"I think this was a great win for us. ASU is a great team. I think this gives us a hedge up on the log jam for second place going down the stretch."
