LOS ANGELES - Going up against the two-time defending national champions, 19th-ranked Arizona State (1-1) produced its ninth-worst team total in six seasons and fell to No. 2 UCLA (5-3) 195.325-192.125 in women's gymnastics action Sunday in front of 1,347 at Pauley Pavilion.
The Sun Devils were strongest on floor exercise, where they accumulated a team total of 49.025, their best team total in any event this season. ASU struggled elsewhere however, twice accumulating event totals below 48 points for the first time since the 2001 season-opener.
"I'm speechless about our performance," ASU head coach John Spini said. "UCLA left the door open for us, but we completely self-destructed on uneven bars and balance beam. There were times out there when I wondered whether it was the same team I brought here."
The Sun Devils got off to a slow start on uneven bars in the opening rotation. Rhonda Robinette and Maggie Germaine led the way with a pair of 9.75s as the Sun Devils hit five of six routines, but the end result was a team total of only 48.200.
Then on vault, an event where ASU has been spread thin due to injuries, a 9.65 by sophomore Jada Cox proved to be the high mark en route to a team total of 47.600.
ASU looked to have bounced back when it got to floor exercise in the third rotation. Germaine and junior Ashley Ellsberry each managed 9.875s, just ahead of freshman Kari Muth at 9.825. Sophomore-transfer Carla DeMartini, in her first meet as a Sun Devil after transferring from the University of Oklahoma in the off-season, earned a 9.775.
Finally, on beam, freshman Trisha Dixon led off with a 9.7, but the following five routines netted four falls and a season-low 47.300 event total.
UCLA meanwhile, which outscored the Sun Devils in every event, polished off its victorious night with a perfect 10.0 by Jamie Dantzcher on the floor exercise.
The Sun Devils will be back in action Friday when they host Pac-10 foe Stanford at 7:30 p.m. in Wells Fargo Arena. The Cardinal are coached by five-year ASU assistant/associate coach Kristen Smyth, in her first season at Stanford.
